Berkley Choppo

The Berkley Choppo is an easy-to-fish topwater prop bait designed to create explosive surface action for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and other aggressive gamefish. Featuring a durable cupped propeller tail, precision-balanced body and sharp Fusion19 treble hooks, the Choppo creates a combination of sound, spray and waking action that helps draw fish to the surface.

The defining feature of the Berkley Choppo is its rotating cupped tail propeller. As the bait moves across the surface, the tail creates continuous commotion, throwing water and producing a distinctive sound that can help attract fish from a distance. This makes the Choppo an excellent choice when anglers want a topwater presentation that can be cast out and retrieved while continuously creating surface disturbance.

Unlike topwater lures that require anglers to master a specific walking or popping cadence, the Choppo is designed around a simple cast-and-retrieve presentation. Cast it toward productive water, begin your retrieve and allow the propeller tail to create the bait's signature action. Retrieve speed can be adjusted to change the amount of surface disturbance and help determine how aggressively fish want the bait presented.

The Choppo's precision-balanced body helps the lure begin working quickly and track straight across the surface at a variety of retrieve speeds. Anglers can slow the bait down when fish prefer a more deliberate presentation or increase retrieve speed when searching for active fish and covering larger areas of water.

The Berkley Choppo is an excellent topwater bait for fishing shallow cover. Cast it along grass lines, over submerged vegetation, around docks, beside laydowns, across shallow flats and around other areas where bass move toward the surface to feed. It can also be worked across open water when bass are actively chasing baitfish near the surface.

Berkley's durable propeller design is built to maintain its shape, including when stored in hot tackle boxes where softer tail materials can potentially deform. The enhanced propeller surface area creates additional sound and spray, while the lure's balanced design keeps it running properly throughout the retrieve.

Sharp Fusion19 treble hooks provide dependable hooking performance when bass strike the Choppo. Because topwater strikes can occur suddenly and aggressively, the combination of sharp hooks and multiple hook points helps convert explosive surface attacks into landed fish.

Fisherman's Central offers the Berkley Choppo in 75, 90, 105 and 120 sizes, allowing anglers to match the lure's profile to forage size, target species and fishing conditions. Smaller Choppo models provide a more compact presentation, while the larger 105 and 120 sizes create a larger profile and increased surface presence.

Berkley specifically recommends the Choppo 90 around shallow cover in calmer conditions. The larger 105 and 120 models can also be worked around shallow cover and are suited for conditions ranging from calm to choppy water. This makes size selection useful not only for matching forage but also for adapting to changing surface conditions.

A wide selection of natural baitfish, bluegill, frog, ghost and high-contrast colors gives anglers options for different forage, water clarity and light conditions. Natural patterns can help match local baitfish and panfish, while brighter or higher-contrast options provide a different surface profile when conditions change.
